ISBN & Bar codes?

Greetings,

My name is Sherri and I am new to the communiy. I have not set up a POD book yet but would like to get the process started and give it a go. I have my own ISBN's, but do I need to purchase bar codes too?  I was confused about that and could not find any info on it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

You don't need to purchase a bar code. If you're designing your own cover, you can put the bar code on the back if you want (there are sites that generate them for free) or you can just leave the appropiate space blank on the lower right of the back cover and CS will generate and print the bar code there for you.

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

I've used Terry Burton with no problems. It offers all sorts of barcodes in addtion to the ISBN, including the 5 digit EAN, if you want to include a price barcode.  It's a free site.

Generator: http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/

Generator: http://www.barcoding.com/upc/

Information: http://www.ggbarcode.com/ISBNinformationPage.html

Barcode color: http://www.barcode-us.com/upc/upcColorChart.html

ISBN Printing: http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/isbn/international/html/usm7.htm

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

You can use the free ISBN (CS will give you the numbers) and CS will be listed as the publisher of record.

You can use the Custom ISBN (CS charges $10, and they will give you the numbers) and you will be listed as the publisher of record.

In the post I mader earlier, you can use terryburton to create the barcode, or you can let CS create it and place it in your cover.

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

Correct. Since you already have your own ISBNs, you can let CS create and place the bar code on the back cover for no cost.

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

The barcode is separate from the ISBN.  The ISBN is a number that is assigned to you/your book(edition, etc.)/the publisher. Once you have the number, you need a barcode on the back cover of your book.

CS can provide a barcode. You can get one and put it on your cover yourself.

The actual ISBN can come from:

CS free (CS is the publisher of record)

CS Custom ISBN $10 (you are listed as the publisher but you can only use the ISBN with books printed through CS)

CS Universal ISBN $99 & ISBN from Bowker $125 (both can be used anywhere and list you as the publisher)

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

Walton,

Do you know if CS includes the PRICE (you know, as in "$9.99"...I don' t mean, "is the price *encoded* in the UPC data") on the top of the bar code, or should I put the price on the cover myself?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

I always add the barcode, so I can only say what I understand from the forum.  If CS adds the barcode, it is only the ISBN.  If you want a price code, you must add it. You can get both for free at http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

Walton,

I used the link you gave me to make my own ISBN bar code.  It looks just like the CS-generated one, but I can place it better as part of my cover image than they can add it (apparently, they don't really place it where the CS cover template says they will: I lined text up with it, and it's "off" in my proof).

Do I have to do anything to warn them I put the bar code in the cover already, or will they paste a secondary one over it (which will probably look bad)?  I don't know how automated their process is (guessing no humans involved who look at my cover image).

thank you!

ooh-forgot:

Is it abnormal if I DON'T put a price on the cover?

Should I add the price in text near the ISBN bar code, if nothing else?  I suppose I could put the highest price I might ever think of charging on the cover, and at worst, people may feel like they're getting a deal?  I'm planning to price on the low end, to trade possible exposure for $.

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

No it is not abnormal to have no price on the cover. Reasoning - you may want to discount the book at book signings or for friends and families - bookstores determine their own price and may cover the isbn with a label that has their price - I have done 20 titles with CS and none of them have prices listed in the isbn block

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

I have recently inked contracts with 2 Indy bookstores and in both cases the owners specifically requested that I do not print a cover price or have a price included in the barcode if possible. These small stores often run on a different profit margin and like to be able to set the retail price on their own. Additionally as I am Canadian having a price in USD and CAN is the standard but as exchange rates fluctuate customers and store owners see both prices and occasionally question why the difference is not reflective of the exchange.

Re: ISBN & Bar codes?

I placed my own barcode as it gave me a chance to size and place it how I felt bet suited the cover.
