Children's Book Sizes

I have in front of me two very popular children's books and both are approximately 5x7 trim size, in fact in talking with a librarian I was told that all of the books are about that size so that they fit well on the shelf.  When I attempted to put a trim size of 5x7 I was informed by createspace that it would not be available for expanded distribution because it was not "industry standard."  Also, create space states that only books of certain sizes 6x9 etc. can have the off-white color paper. 6x9 while stated as "industry standard", I am assuming this must be industry standard for self published books.  Why is industry standard according to createspace not standard with the most popular books?

Re: Children's Book Sizes

The 'industry standard' sizes listed by Createspace are in fact the standards accepted in the industry for a Trade Paperback which is what CS produces. The smaller trim sizes you are referring to are industry standards for Mass Market Paperbacks which are a lower quality, cheaper product. While Mass Market Paperbacks have become more popular due to their cheaper price, Trade Paperbacks are beginning to grow in popularity as more and more large publishers are choosing to release them after Hardcovers yet before moving to Mass Markets. The paper quality of a Trade paperback is closer to that of a hardcover and the cover and binding is typically thicker and of higher quality.

The CS industry standards (Black and White) are as follows.
