What kind of pen do you use for autographs?

Yes, it's a serious question.  I just messed up my first autographed "thank you" copy with a gloppy black marker thing.  I thought it would look more official than using a regular ball point pen.  Pthhhhhh.....

Nah, that's a great question!

I did a few early autographs in Sharpie, and got the same results as you.

Cheapie pens aren't much better, as ink clots at the tip.

I usually use an inexpensive retractable (I think my fav sportinggoods store gives them away as promos.) I like them because the tip retracts, so little clotting, and the pen itself is clear, so I can see how much ink is left (running out in the middle of a signing is annoying, and makes the writing look sloppy.)

I've actually had a customer ask for a new copy, because I screwed up the signature. I don't blame him a bit!

Pilot Precise Grip V5 (very fine), black ink.  Costs about $2.  (Outside the U.S., I think it is sold as Pilot Hi-Tecpoint Grip V5.)

Re: What kind of pen do you use for autographs?

Sharpies smear on glossy paper and have offset.

I do like the Pilot.

My problem is that I cannot write anything, especially with someone looking, without making mistakes--transposed letters, missing letters, etc.  I don't mean now and again, but always. If I print, I'm sometimes able to catch the mistakes.  I learned in second grade that putting the dot between the "ie" or "ei" so that I could argue I got it right never worked.  Oh well.

The answer is devloping a signature style like Thomas Kinkade or Sarah Palin . .  a simple squiggle made with a flourish.

I hear you Walton. My handwriting is such a mess. To write legibly, I have to write very slowly and carefully.

I found the Sharpie pen that doesn't bleed through works well .... It is a fine tip and I wish it was a bit bolder but it does okay ...

My wife found me a Sharpie "Pen" that does not run or bleed. It has a fine tip. A two pack was about $4.00.

What page do you usually autograph? Inside cover? The half title page?

Here I am just trying to finish my book while reading these forums (instead of writing), and y'all are arguing over pens for autographs.

Talk about intimidating...

Would a gel ink pen work, like the G2?

Probably.

I use Staedtler Cool Roller, black, fine tip. I'm looking to get a slightly thicker tip and in a permanent marker. Maybe in blue.
