Re:spam posts

I always thought that the spammers who infest these forums were all bots.  But apparently not as some obviously read some posts.  I had a grizzle a while back  about wading through the spam to find genuine posts and received a suggestion just to scan down looking for headings beginning re:. Good idea I thought and used that method but now I find that some crafty sod is heading his posts with re:.  It's a pity these folk cant use their ingenuity doing something useful.

cheers ed

Re:spam posts

When I first joined, I clicked to receive emails.  This can no longer be switched off (there is a glitch), in the last four hours have received 217 emails from CreateSpace.

I receive an average of 2000+ emails in about a week to ten days. Trawling through them all to try and find the elusive 'genuine' post

Does anybody besides me smell a rat?  This sets off all kinds of alarm bells that suggest to me the forum software has been compromised.

I clear out my emails 'hourly' and again before I go to bed.  The forum is an easy target, shame they don't have a buffer, some forums you can watch and look but unable to post for 48 hours.

Also some of the profiles remain for several months - yes I report them, but to wait one month and 29 days before they remove the profile is a disgrace.

It absolutely does my head in!   been suffering this for a couple of years.

Re:spam posts

Might be an idea to withdraw from CS under your current sign-in and open a new account under a new name? Damned if I could put up with receiving all that spam!

2014 spam emails in six and a half days.

Actually not sure what would happen with current books?

Re:spam posts

We've been battling this for years. CreateSpace just doesn't care. Many of us have given up. For example, here's part of an email exchange I had with them in July of this year (2017):

Hi Marcelo,

But what are you doing to prevent it from happening? This has been going
on for years now.

I keep receiving your assurances that you are working to improve it, but
you're not. Nothing has changed. In April I emailed you, and gave you the
following links to forum threads, years old, where we discussed this:

https://forums.createspace.com/en/community/message/268140#268140https://forums.createspace.com/en/community/message/270077#270077https://forums.createspace.com/en/community/message/206567#206567
I also gave you links to Jive's resources (the forum software is by Jive):

This is Jive's Best Practices for Spam Management:
https://community.jivesoftware.com/docs/DOC-150765
Also, Jive provides some help in the way of a private community, that
you might have access to:

https://community.jivesoftware.com/groups/spam-ideas
https://community.jivesoftware.com/community/about-the-jive-community/blog/2015/03/04/spam-attacks-in-the-jive-community
So, why don't you implement some spam management measures? You could,
for example, limit the number of threads that new members can make. You
could prevent URLs being placed in thread titles.

All new member posts should go through moderation. None should be posted
without approval. That would stop the spam in its tracks.

Cheers,
Steve

Note that this is just a couple of emails in that particular discussion, and that was the latest discussion of many. I've given up. They don't care.

Re:spam posts

I had a late night phone call from them about a year ago, I was reporting so many - they asked me to stop reporting them, as there were too many reports from 'me'.

I was on the verge of forwarding individual emails that I had put into a spam folder, all 3000+, see how they felt being bombarded hourly, daily and weekly.

Re:spam posts

You should!

CreateSpace does many things well, but it seems that this forum is way down on their priority list.

I'm sure they have a spam filter that would route them to the trash.

My ISP automatically sends everything from CS to the spam folder by default.  To get real e-mails from CS I had to rummage through the spam, find examples of actual messages, and configure the spam filter to allow only messages similar to those.

Re:spam posts

All of mine are filtered as 'other'.  Literally all of CreateSpace emails go there.  Frustrating as I trawl through 00s to try and find genuine emails from them.

I liked the idea of closing this profile and starting afresh - am I able to do that and transfer over my current books/isbns?

Re:spam posts

I have spoken on the phone with both Marcelo and Tony (Steve's post above).  They called specifically about selfpublishingforum, link below.  They did not want me to post the URL . . . although CS seems to be okay with the link in my signature.  And that is my answer to all the spam here.

We've got around 500 members (not including those from Bulgaria, Russia, etc.). We seem to get a couple of spams a week.  Sarah (Seisa) beats me to it, so I'm not sure the actual number.

There was a surprisingly large number yesterday or today (I've lost track of which). I wish all spammers would immediately go to a very special place that's far away from the rest of us.
