Why do my images not retain their size on Kindle previewer?

I have a Kindle book file (Word.docx) loaded with illustrations.  All were inserted at 300 dpi or greater resolution.  Most were sized to fill up as much of the screen as possible.  However, when I upload the file and view it in the previewer, the pictures come out much smaller than intended.  I have tried resizing the pictures, but they still reproduce smaller than expected.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?  Is there a way to fix this issue?

First, Word has been known to alter image depth and size. Second, you should upload a PDF (one you've checked thoroughly with Adobe Reader) instead of a Word file.

That's the way the Kindle Previewer is.  And, depending on which Kindle device you select to preview, the photos will be a different size.  For people who have a Kindle, they can enlarge the image by clicking on it, but many Kindle owners do not know that and will complain about the images being too small, depending on which Kindle they own.
