Primary creative media:
I retired in 2003, after working 30 years as a writer -- in journalism, politics, and corporate communications. I was, variously, a congressional press aide, a newspaper reporter and copy editor, political and corporate speechwriter, proposal writer for a large accounting firm, and senior writer for a telecom equipment maker. I always wanted to write a novel, but I was much better at telling other people's stories than making up my own. (I was actually a truthful journalist.) Then, during a visit to the Big Island of Hawai'i in 2004, a wonderful story found me: the story of Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian islands -- mainly by conquest -- for the first time in the Hawaiian people's history, founding the Hawaiian kingdom. I was captivated by the dramatic sweep and arc of this story and amazed to find that, other than some biographies and novels for young readers, it had never really been plumbed in fiction, not even by James Michener. So I decided to write it, initially just to satisfy myself that I could actually write a book. Of course, when I first put cursor to screen (on Nov. 16, 2004) at age 59, I had no idea that writing this novel would consume the next 12 years, including 11 years to finish the first draft and then another year to edit it. The result is my first (and maybe only) book, Once There Was Fire, A Novel of Old Hawaii.
My interests:
Traveling to Hawaii, photography, reading, staying physically fit so that I can maybe write a second historical novel about Hawaii.
