alzheimer training cover art1.jpgRecently, as I have been offline, so to speak- developing my Alzheimer training course- I have been doing a lot of reading, talking and discussion about various strategies for proactive programs to work with Alzheimer and dementia patients-- particularly as they are progressing into the moderate to severe stages of the conditions.

 

I  have been reading and discovering through my own work, what an impact exposure and seemingly low-impact things.. can have in the support of brain... and more... what I refer to as " being present."

 

We CAN improve and change our circumstances. All too often, it seems, a diagnosis/condition like Alzheimer/dementia... is what cancer had been 40 years ago, a sealed fate, at which the patient was at the mercy of... granted with most cancer protocols... the patients have higher survival rates, but still within the mainstream paradigm, rather than more of the self-empowerment ( which is my gig/shtick:), of... what do I need to know, change, and do ( differently:)....

 

I think a lot can and could... and more importantly, NEEDS to be done, proactively and holistically, with a population that is now- in the west- quickly approaching the age where this is going to become an epidemic issue. This is even more true, given the degradation of our lifestyle and health, in comparison to our current seniors lived in terms of health and lifestyle ( our parents generations)...

 

The moderate to severe population of Alzheimer/ dementia also seems to be one of those overlooked populations.. where- once they are no longer able to advocate for themselves.. that less and less is done for them in terms of "rescue" and more energy is put into keeping comfortable, modifying moods, and " slowing progression"... which is admitting defeat before the battle, so to speak. Rather, I think it would be good to see.. a shift into a mindset that says: we need to work HARDER.. to recover ground... just like learning disabled students should be pushed harder ( with correct supports) to CLOSE that gap... before it is too wide to cross ( usually around 7-8th grade)... and the student "gives up" any hope of being a student.. and becomes the failure, class clown, etc.

 

Anyway- I think with alzheimer's and dementia, also.. it is imperative that we work HARDER and SMARTER... to try to recover lost ground and bring as much back as possible, and maintain a routine and regiment that supports optimal brain function. The current model of.. status quo and slow decline... just won't cut it, as more and more of the baby boomer population become part of those rising statistics.

 

 

What I found when working with client at a BoneBuilders exercise class.. the first time there was a good degree of trepidation, and within the first 20 or so minutes, the stress level heightened.. and I respected and honoured that- working more on the long-term results than the immediacy. I diverted and reassured a few times.. but understood and intuited what the actual limit was. We left early, in good stead, as she made farewells to the group and the group was very positive and supportive even upon her exit.

 

The following time-- the time frame lengthened and the stress was less. After about 3-4 visits.. she was able to stay for the duration. Each time the stress decreased, her enjoyment was high. the difference here though, may be that there is higher interaction.. where she would "chatter" and people were very supportive. Each week she learned-remembered more and more of the routines. and although i was mentoring her through all of them, lifting-coaching an arm or leg etc... she was willing and over time, helped more and more- beginning to do a good portion of it with the coaxing-prompting of my holding, stretching etc,.

 

SO, based on my own client experiences with Bone-builders classes in VT- my thought was. how could this be applied to yoga or other environments: where the setting is a little more specialised and accommodating. It would seem to me, in a regular yoga class that others may find the random 'chatter" distracting and a nuisance- even if being supportive of the other person... they ultimately are there for their own experience. hence my thought about a niche-based program... where mentors worked client-students through routines, that were a little more social-supportive oriented than a traditional yoga class might be, did that make sense?

 

I think the mild Alzheimer/dementia patient probably could do well, but what about that next level- a population that seems very under-served...? I think it could be extremely beneficial- if, especially as a few of you have noted.. the lifestyle-dietary changes that often accompany self-awareness journeys;)

 

Maybe there needs to be a specialised niche within the niche.. where a yoga or exercise program can be developed, geared toward moderate to advanced patients.. In this instance each client-student-patient is working with a "mentor" to teach their BODY... the motions.. which goes into muscle memory, and informs the brain... In this way, new pathways can be built.. the brain oxygenates etc and can begin to receive the various benefits that yoga can impart... plus, it is social.. it is brain stimulation-- any time we learn/ experience something new... the brain benefits:)...

 

 

 

I think that the benefits of yoga -- or other social exercise groups-- to mind, body and spirit! so long as the environment is such that the level of ability, is always monitored by the "mentor" and gives breaks ( step out for a walk or bathroom etc).. so that, like a special needs classroom.... there is a more relaxed focus on curriculum, so to speak, and more on the emotional-mental of the student:)

100_3747Autumn is  one of those times of the year that seems to bring on deep reflection.  Maybe it’s the leaf-musty slightly damp weather that holds something of  both warmth and sadness. A wistfulness intrinsically woven through the  mist that loops its magic fingers into the sleepy world.

 

 

I’m not  sure why how this question came to me… I think it was a combination of a  song lyric that I had just heard… something about being near the end… I  think the lyric went; this is where we start again. But my wandering  thoughts, following the random nature of the autumn mist- took their own  turn. If this is the end… or near the end… was it worth it? That was a  thought-stopping question, for me. I don’t know.  while Recovering from  bubonic-flu plague, is probably not the best time to contemplate  deep-meaning questions…. but there it was….

 

 

As a  medicine person, part of the training I went through ( not all people  take identical training- and I am grateful for the mentors and teachers I  had), one of the areas we spend 6 months working with intensely, is  what we refer to as “Death Rites.” We do in fact, learn the underlying  concepts of helping people ( and animals) cross, when it is their Time,  learning how to help discern IF it is their time, and supporting all  involved in the process of someone’s death-journey. However, before we  do that… we were rigourously trained in taking on aspects of our own  death-journey.

 

 

One of my  teachers framed it this way; if Death showed up, and tapped you on the  shoulder, right NOW… Are you ready to go? The point of this, is to push  us to resolve anything that is still lingering. We were taught to make  sure, and to go through the process, of any unspoken “ I love you’s,”  “I’m sorry’s,” and “goodbyes.” Cleaning house, on an energetic and  emotional level. It is a very cathartic process, of re-capitulating an  entire life: looking back on it, and examining it with eyes that are  searching to create closure and resolution. To make peace with anyone  and anything, that might be the equivalent of “ bad karma,” the kinds of  things, when we really think about and consider– we don’t want to  follow us, or to have to deal with later. Much like a sink full of  dishes pile of laundry, there comes a point when you know it’s time to  wash them and put them away. They are messy, taking up space, and get in  the way of creativity and progress in your own life.

 

 

However,  all of this work… none of these questions is quite the same as having to  ask: Was it worth it? The first question, is kind of like writing the  story, and wanting to make any changes to the script. The second  question… is more like assessing the value and quality of the script as a  whole. Is it “done?” And, does it have value? The image that comes to  my mind, is something like Tolkien’s the Hobbit, where Frodo closes the  book, the book of his story….both Bilbo and Frodo have had, told and are  satisfied with their stories… their part in the bigger story is done.  And they are both satisfied, content. There is closure. So, if I were  closing that metaphorical book, my book… would there be a satisfaction  and closure there? Or, if say when we continue on our post-life  journey…. and I ran into a tourist, looking for a place to visit– would  Earth and Life… by on my list of recommendations? What would I have to  say about this place and time?

 

 

Was it  worth it? Did I figure out the important questions? Unfortunately, the  life-journey is not like a school program. There is no quiz at the end.  No one to tell us if we pass, or fail, or what the deeper meaning and  bigger picture mean. Did I figure out the Life Question? Did I figure  out the my-life question? And how those two meet to co-create the path  and story that I have woven? What is the measure of success? A life  well-lived?

What IS Spirituality?

Buzz terms that are all over these days.  But spirituality is one of  those vague terms, like the term healing– which I will address in a  later posting topic– a vague term, in that there doesn’t seem to be a  real tangible definition… but many people use the term spiritual to  define their outlook or approach to life.

I use it a lot myself.  And I realised today, that I’ve acquired a  “sense of the word,”  without ever really codifying it for myself.  I  have done this a lot with Quechuan terms, such as ayniAyni is a term that I love, and use a lot.  It is the cornerstone of the  Andean and Peruvian cosmology.  But it is a word for which there is no  direct translation. The word spiritual is beginning to feel like this  kind of foreign word, when I try to pin it down.  Does that make sense?   Just like Ayni…

I remember struggling with the word-concept Ayni, when I was a  student.  People would use it, and my brain would try to create a  translation or understanding, according to words and definitions that  worked in western discourse.  It vaguely translates as balance– but has  much deeper and subtler nuance than that, having to do with reciprocity  and sacred harmony. ‘there IS no word in English that translates, and  even conceptually.  It is a term y you develop an entirely new  relationship with- unable to import any word or concept already in  existence.  You can try to equate the term to something you already  understand– but that doesn’t always work.  Often, words are something  that we learn to “grok,”  wrap our understanding around, without ever  having the distinct and clear definition to accompany them.

That is what deep-language, or fluency really means.  An innate  understanding of language and usage.  of course this doesn’t apply to  the common mis-usages and applications of words.  But other than that-  when someone says  something, or uses an expression- we understand the   context and implication of what they are expressing.

So- spirituality is a word that is emerging as one of those words.   People use it a lot these days, but it has yet to find that commonly  understood definition.,

Okay, so I am now giving a lot of thought to this question.  I’m  finding is more slippery than I had anticipated.  I want to avoid  resorting to textbook definitions for now.  I’ll be curious to see what  dictionaries offer as a way of explanation.

What does it mean to be spiritual, or to have a spiritual practice? I  am referencing this now, outside of any religious connotations or  parameters.

I consider myself to be a spiritual person.

To be spiritual: to develop and maintain a connection to a higher  power? this could be Nature, a religious belief or deity, or whatever  one perceives as Source?  but by this definition- can an atheist be  considered spiritual?

So, the definition needs to be expanded, to include ones inner or higher self, rather than anything external as a higher power…

So this concept of connection to”something”.. works.

 

How does it play out? What does it mean to live a spiritual life?   What does spiritual practice look like?   What does it mean, in terms  owe live or lives?

 

If we say that it is about consider the bigger picture, or the  greater good- is that spiritual, or moral?  Or is morality a component  of being spiritual?

Is it about maintaining a practice of relaxation and grounding- and how is this different than “stress reduction?”

Is it about how we receive information, and how we process it? ie,  meditation and prayer? And if so, how is this different than a religious  practice?

What does spiritual mean to you? And what does that look like?

I  want to touch more deeply on the topic of PLAY. Ideally PLAY and  creativity should be connected, should be tapping the same place.  The  difficulty we have in western/ modern society, is that we don’t really   play.  We are very disconnected from that place, of playing.  There is  an excellent book, playing by heart- that touches on this topic in more  depth. But essentially, we don’t play.  We recreate. We have structured  activities, structures games that have outcomes, rules, and  expectations. And even though we play games they have structure and a  goal, of wining. And that isn't really playing... it's competition.  Why do we think of this as "fun?"


I think, in our culture, it has created a paradigm that associates playing, and winning.  We need to win in order to have the satisfaction of playing.   When in fact, playing, in and of itself has no expectation and  outcome.  The difference being, when we play with an expectation of  outcome, we put a stress on it. There is an anxiety, an expectation.  Genuine playing has no parameters.  Its’ colouring outside the lines.  It’s not meeting  external or internal expectations. There is no  assessment.   There’s no time frame and it is not a reward. Playing in  and of itself is the reward.


A  little kid might follow a butterfly for an hour, following it from  flower to flower. That is the action of playing.   It is engaging.  It is being present in the moment,  being caught up in wonder.  Colouring- not because you want to be an artist, but  because you just like the colours. 

Playing  when it is a reward or a punishment, or parameters are set onto it…  stifles creativity.  When we say: okay, I will do this this, and this,  and then I will play.  Or, if we say, I will play for 10 minutes, and  then I need to do my work.  What we do, when we do this, is we separate  out the significant elements of the function of play, as though it is  not integral to everything we do.   There are a lot of inspirational,  advice people, guru’s etc.. and the essential message from many of them  is—if you love what  you do, then your job is not work- tedious and  painful.  More or less. 


When  you bring your passion and enthusiasm into your work, when that  creative and play-aspect is incorporated into the rest of our lives, we  look forward to going to work.  It is fun, pleasant and we are engaged  on all our levels.  So one thing that will really serve us,  is if we  can learn how to tap back into that aspect of our creativity and play,  into the things we are doing.  For children this is instinctive and  automatic.  Kids, cleaning their room might pretend the toys on the  floor need rescuing from shark infested water.  As parents, we engage  our children with play in order to accomplish things.  Getting a baby to  open his mouth for the airplane, in order to eat his/ her dinner… As  children we engage in play, and as adults- we utilize play aspects in  order to engage our children into cooperation.  And yet, as adults, we  ourselves, are separated from that aspect.  There is no creativity- it  is supposed to be “work.”


It  stops being fun. Sometimes  through listening to that intuitive place,  we realize we are disconnected from play- which  involves a job change.  Because what we are doing isn’t play. This is a scary place to be.   Hearing WHAT that inner voice has to say, truths that make us  uncomfortable.  And often, we don’t want to hear it, and we stifle it.  We end up in places that does not feed our passion.  The work we are doing doesn’t have a reward. So the part of us that  wants to be engaged feels like it is being punished.  Being stifled.  Being pushed aside. Just like a little kid. Mommy doesn’t have time  now.  Mommy’s busy.  Ask me later.  That little kid is always being  pushed aside, pushed aside. That little kid that wants to be connected  and be part of your life, goes away.  So a lot of us, as adults, need to  re-nurture that relationship, bring that connection back on  board..gently.  But it’s not going to be right there and jump back into  your life at maximum power. Just like a little kid, it’s going to peek  around the corner: hesitant, reluctant, unsure- ‘do you really want me?’  is this going to last very long, or are  you going to change your mind  and send me back to sit in the corner again?


So building that relationship, as though building a relationship with a child.   And building a relationship with that inner-child, brings that creativity and intuition back on board,  gives you vision.  And those are very powerful tools that you want to  have.  And we will have them, whenever we want or need to utilize them. 


But, like that child-relationship, there is an element of reciprocal relationship.   We can’t just put them aside and continue to ignore them when they show  up.  And sometimes, there is a negotiation, or bargaining agreement  that takes place.  Because it is a reality that we cannot always stop  and indulge what society perceives, and our bosses perceive, as our  whims.  Sometimes we do have to say, ‘Now is not the time.”  Or we  develop strategies that work with that mid-ground. 


I  often carry my digital recorder, so I can make notes, or quickly  dictate the outline of information.  This way, I can come back to it  later, with as much rough-data as possible.  Or carrying a note pad, and  making a few notes of something, enough to remind me later.  I write  enough to remember what  it was, and any relevant associations.  So that  I know I had an idea for an article, and what was relevant about that  topic.  This helps in terms of productivity.  But it is also an  agreement with that creative element that says:  I will come back to  this.  And it is important that we maintain that ‘agreement,’ and go  back to that information or idea.  In this way, we are fostering that  relationship.  We are saying- this is good, and I like it.  We are not  saying no, we are just saying, not right now. 


So  by coming back to it, we are honouring it, and saying thank you for  waiting.  When we come back to that information or idea, we may find  that it isn’t as vital and rich as when we first had the idea- but as  this practice develops… we find that that clarity and intensity builds and comes back more fully and with ease.


For  example,  I never used to dream very much.  If someone asked me, I  would have sworn that I didn’t dream.  Even though I know this is  biologically impossible.  Aside- without dreaming, we would actually and  literally go insane.  But for all intents and purposes, in terms of any  recollection.  I would say, no: I didn’t dream.  Someone suggested I  try keeping a dream journal- this was in relation to intuitive work I  was doing.  At first I was very doubtful- since I never remembered any  dreams.  I was sure all I would have was blank pages in a pretty book.   And yet, as I made a point of writing down my dreams very first thing in  the morning… I started to remember my dreams more and more.  It started  a little slowly: one or two in fragments. But,  I got to the point  where I was clearly remembering 3-5 dreams, vividly with great detail  every morning. 


And  I would go through the day, and see something which would spark a  memory from dreams… it was a very interesting exercise.  And it clearly  demonstrated that we can, in fact, strengthen those relationships just  by bringing our attention and intention to them.   But those two things  need to be coupled with an action.  I didn’t remember more dreams just  by trying to think about them.  I began to remember dreams when I made a  regular practice and took the action of writing them down. 


So  you can develop and strengthen that relationship.  The more  you use  it, the more  it gets stronger, quicker and more effective. So it’s  really important to build that relationship.  It is your inner voice, your intuition speaking to you and the creative aspect of who you are.  Once you develop that connection, life begins to unfold differently,  and then to find out where it leads you.  Life becomes a journey of  exploration, and discovery. 


Ideally,  that brings back into our lives, that sense of wonder.  When we are no  longer trying to anticipate and create an outcome, we can shift into a  frame of mind that asks:  where is this going? And be led by curiosity  and exploration in our lives.  And that changes the way we live. From  trying to get to a destination, to how the journey unfolds for us.  And  that is a really big and powerful transformation.    It doesn’t happen  automatically. There are some tools and exercises that can help bring  that creativity and intuition back on board. Just like learning a new  sport or activity, it starts slowly, but once you begin to make that   connection you build it. 


Once   you build it, you’re going to find its always there.  Always  accessible.  And a handy tool to have in your repertoire. Whether it is  about dealing with relationships, making life changes, gaining  perspective on events, or inspiration in your business.  Tapping into  your inner resources, opens whole new dimensions, perspectives,  and new  pathways.

We look at the  brain and break it down into the frontal rational brain, the hind-brain  which is binary, and the crucial role the mid-brain plays in connecting  the two aspects of our brains and information.

100_3507I  was following a discussion thread the other day.  I forget now, what  the original topic was about- that happens, when discussion threads take  on a life and energy of their own.  But there was one point, one  response in this exchange that caught my attention, and I felt drawn to  elaborate on it.  Someone said it was about learning to love the  unlovable.

 

On  first read, it sounds great, its catchy it's profound..It probably ties  into the core teachings in the Andean cosmology that caused the term,  the phrase and concept to stand out.  In the Andean teachings.., there  aren't "good" and "bad."  in this same vein then... there isn't that  distinction between lovable, and unlovable.  It is all about our  relationship to something. 

 

I  would take it out of the paradigm of loving the unlovable.  I think  ultimately, it is about understanding that the "unlovable" is a  'something' that we define.  We describe or determine something as   unlovable.. ascribing a negative to it. Now we have something with which  we need to come to terms, or make peace.. or love the unlovable.   This  made me think of the proverbial in-laws gift, like an ugly vase.  You  can't get rid of it, for reasons of maintaining good relationships...  but can't stand the thing and wish it an untimely demise! 

 

Granted,  our experiences aren't as clear-cut as an unloved vase.  If only it  were that easy.  But,  in some ways, not so different.  Using anger as  an example, and going back to the Andean principles...I would take 2  tracks... one.. understand the dynamic.   Often we are angry because of  "something."    Anger itself.. is useful.. when we understand it, and  direct it in such a way that we make constructive change in our lives.   SO,  find the paradigm. Is the underlying theme, anger? betrayal? grief?  abandonment? Once we see the paradigm... the story loses its power.  It  was never ABOUT the story!  It was about the energy, the emotion, the  paradigm.

And  even if it IS as simple as the emotion of the moment... more often than  not, the emotion is far more complex than it seems at the surface.   Often, even if we are "angry" at someone else.. the real anger is toward  ourselves.. As much as we are angry at someone who hurt us... we are  also angry that we trusted someone, perhaps wrongly. So, while there is  anger, there is betrayal; and there is also self-doubt, in our ability  to reliably know friend from foe, to accurately "read the landscape" in  such a way as to remain safe.  Ultimately, we are all trying to play the  I'm OK, You're OK, game.. and we try to make sure that WE, at least,  are OK.  But wouldn't it be nice if there was a win-win... and both  parties could be "OK" in the end? When we can understand OUR part, OUR  side of the equation, WHY we feel what we feel, we are more than halfway  to releasing its power over us.

 

One  important step in accomplishing this, is realising that A- the event,  and B, our response... are not connected. A does not CAUSE B.  An event  happens. Period.  Hurt, anger, etc.. are how we choose to response- to define it.  We can choose many responses.. A B C D etc. Then, we  broaden the options to include something more productive.  We can choose  to be angry.. responding, rather than reacting.. and anger is energy  that works FOR us, rather than against us. We can also choose what we  want, becoming active participants, rather than passive recipients.  I  had a client recently, who was upset because her sibling always sucked  her in.  I told her-- change that.  SIBLING doing something-- you have  no control over.  By changing it, to I let myself get sucked in... THAT  we-she can work with.  We have control over THAT portion of the story.

Another element in regards to how we choose to define the events around is, the unlovable events in our life: rethinking our relationships.  This  shifts when we stop perceiving our relationships with the people and  events around us.. and perceive our relationship with the universe/  source/whatever one chooses to call it.  When someone hurts us-- it is  an opportunity for healing/ growth.  Absolutely!  Or, maybe the universe  has been telling us.. it is time to move forward.  Have we been  ignoring that message?  We all do this sometimes.  We hold onto things,  because they are safe, known, or familiar.  But sometimes it is time to  move forward, which entails releasing old-stuff.

Or maybe the universe sees that we need work on boundaries, or  agreements, etc.  Instead of making the problem between two people...  step back and ask,  "what is it I need to understand from this lesson,  this experience?"   When we get that lesson, it no longer has power over  us. In fact, we are wiser and usually at Peace.   We are further  empowered by it...

Pretty  cool, huh?  Remember, how you hold it impacts how someone else will  perceive it-- look at any of the talk shows.. where people watch.... to  see how other people ( the studio audience and host)... react to  situations and events....

so  yeah, next time someone comes in,  saying I am sad, or angry, or hurt,  or whatever "negatively" perceived emotion, just think-- what an  opportunity!   Give them that space to have the HUH??? moment... I'm  pissed.. why is this good... why are you "happy" about it... before  supplying them the answer.. maybe even ASK them... if they say HUH... ?   ask them why it might be a good thing.. see where their own perceptions  and thought processes can take them... and, aside.. that can give  further insight into what is playing out and where they are, on their  path:)

See,  there is no such thing, as the unlovable.  It is all just our  perception.  It isn't good, or bad.  "It" just happened... the question  is-- do you find the opportunity in the crisis?   The universe is full  of surprises- patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.

100_3441I  was just following another blog post that was about how people receive  advice from their partners.. and how well that works out.... what an  awesome and interesting topic to delve into.. As a spiritual-medicine  person, I think my way of addressing the topic is a little different  than most "coaches" ... and that's great! It helps soo much when we look  at things differently, consider an object from a different vantage  point. in fact, during my training, i remember being taught to stand on  something very tall/high distant...and examine my nature meditation.. I  was also taught to get down on my hands and knees and look at the same  thing right up close... You only have to do that a few times to see how  much we can change, by changing the lens...

but back to advice and partnerships...

One of my first teachers kind of instilled.. only if you are asked ( re
healing work, but I think it applies here:)..

 

Anytime  anything is unasked for.. it feels like an intrusive energy. in  energetic terms- we are stealing or usurping someone's power.. like  entering a home, or sacred space, without permission. Someone's energy/  bubble.. is their home.. Even though we can't see it. And I think,  because we can't see it.. it is harder to consider those boundaries the  same way we would a closed or open door, a welcome mat, versus a no  trespassing sign:)

So in terms of how we take or receive advice from a partner-spouse-other..I think it
often depends.. not on the person.. but on the presentation. Too often,
in familiar relationships.. partners can over-step(?) in their desire to
help and be supportive... and while it isn't that the advice is not wanted
or the person not appreciated.. the informal(?) format.. lines up too many
variables to create resistance.

 

If it were me with a partner.. I might start with.., "hey, I was just thinking
about your situation.. ( insert whatever info)... and had some thoughts...
would I be out of line if I shared them? " -- or-- would you like an
outside opinion/ perspective? by always asking first.. it is allowing the
recipient to be engaged in the process and not feel like it is a
power-over situation..

 

Sometimes,  though.. even seeing things clearly..and this can be hard to do... to  allow them to crash.. the partner has to step back and let them crash.  My ex-whatever and I had our own business (
which living and working, was a little too much "together" ) but
anyway... after a while I learned just to step back and say nothing,
because of the resentment of someone "knowing more" than he did. He would
often look at me later and say-- you knew that was going to happen..
didn't you? -- maybe if I had been wiser back then.. more savvy.. I would
have been able to broach the information-sharing ground with more
diplomacy....and while I never had or needed the " I told you so" kind of moments.. he felt them keenly on his side...

As for being on the receiving end... I am pretty open. if someone is
considerate, well-thought and collaborates well, even verbally.. I thrive
on that energy of ideas bouncing around... so long as it isn't about
someone trying to say.. youre wrong/ stupid/crazy and I'm brilliant better
whatever.. in other words-- as long as it is more about the idea, the  information... than it is about power and struggle. creativity beats  control- every time!

 

So I suppose the simple rule is to follow the  i'm ok, you're ok guideline:) The question to use as a litmus test  might be... am I trying to be right? Or am I trying to put an idea out  there as a suggestion, without attachment to it being picked up?

Does  anyone else have the experience of treating partners differently, or  reacting and responding differently in relationships, be it a partner,  or family...?

Nualla and Monika.JPGI just read a post- what is the one thing, moment.. that you will  never forget. Do you remember any life-altering points you can look back  to, either momentous, or maybe seemingly tiny ( at the time)? I  probably have a few, but the one that came to mind is the time when I  was about 17, in boarding-school/camp. I always wanted to work with  horses, loved horses, related better to horses and animals than I ever  had to people. It was my niche, where I felt understood, accepted and  belonging. But I struggled with my parents refusal to support who I was,  and what i wanted to do with my life. My then mentor and hero,  Ehren,  whispered words that would change my life, or at least if not change it…  changed my perspective. She said, with compassion and not any sense of  goading: You don’t need your parent’s permission to do what you want  with your life.” That was a novel, and freeing, concept.

 

I had spent so much of my life, in pain and sadness and frustration. I  hoped every day, that my parents would wake up and see me for who I  was. NOT the champion swimmer, or the merit-scholar/ honour student. BE  like someone else, was the daily chanted mantra. Along with that, was  the echo of disappointment and rejection that reverberated through my  life. My life was the daily war of attrition between hope and despair.  Hope that the world would just stop pummeling me with expectations, and  despair that I could ever BE what that upscale preppy world of affluence  and ambition dictated as karma/destiny.

 

I looked the same, and as per private school- dressed the same, and  yet.. was never the same. My peers knew this intuitively- uncanny  creatures that kids are. and cruel. I was ignored, shunned, pushed away  by my “peers.” And those were the better days. In the less-lucky days, I  was called names, taunted and targeted. and to this day… ironically,  perhaps.. none of those people who made my daily life such an unceasing  misery.. even remember me.

 

And I am okay with that. These people shaped me. I can thank them,  for showing me with direct experience– all of the things I do NOT…  EVER,… want to be. The things that should NOT be perpetuated. I  understand, NOW.. what I have learned from animals, about what we, as  humans, all too often, are not.

 

All of those people, have gone on, with varying degrees of their  successes and failures. Where any of them ended up, I really do not  know. And I am fine with that. When I say that they shaped who I am, I  mean that I learn to find who I am. It took me a while, and a wandering  path, literally and metaphorically, to find the firm footing of identity  and acceptance that comes with awareness.

 

I don’t know that I ever tried to BE like other people. I often  floated, fleetingly, through the peripheries of social cliques- like a  foreigner, looking for the hint of native tongue- someone who spoke a  language that was comprehensive.. someone who was ” like me.”

I have found it, a few times, over the years, in varying degrees. A  few good friends, for whom I would do most anything… and have done a few  hairbrained things… with never a regret.

 

But through all those turbulent years of “growing up,” animals, and  horses, were my tether- to identity, to direction, to sanity, and Soul.  They taught me, more than anything else– what is important, what matters  and what is needed. We don’t need more Latte’s or designer coffee. Our  kids don’t need more after school activities and structured  conformity-inducing “enrichment.”

 

We all need, the compassion that animals freely offer us. The  acceptance of who we are NOW, that has nothing to do with expensive  cars, successful careers, money, affluent friends and snobbery. whether  it is a teeny furry ball of kitten-fur, or a 1500 pound horse, and all  things inbetween, They don’t WANT… anything… FROM us ( other than at  feeding time:) They become the mirrors, or our own best ( and sometimes  worst) selves.

 

Do we come home from a long day, too tired to see that they are HAPPY  we are there, both in this moment, and in this world. Do we push them  aside, in our hurry to race through the minutiae of expected modern  living? Or do we stop, see them, and the love that flows out of them,  overflows, radiating vital heart-energy that they GIVE to replenish the  vital-heart- energy that our lives suck from our soul?

 

I never got the approval of my parents, and my siblings hold little  regard for who or where I am. and for certain, my peers were never going  to ” get it.”.. But that isn’t what it’s all about. I.. got it. I know  that I followed the path that I knew was in front of me– even when I  couldn’t see it, or understand the concept of ” a path.”…

 

So- while we remember those who have given their lives for the things  we ” hold dear.,” and I believe we need to be politically questioning a  lot of things in this world– we need to remember the ones that have  been here all along, giving their lives in service to us. Shaping us,  sometimes silently, along the way.  The ones who have been trying to  help us each, find our own best selves. and also, those who have set us  on the path and held the space around us. Yes- many have shaped our  lives, both personally and as a country. What we do with it, who we  choose to become– and that IS a choice… what we do, moving forward… is  how we remember, and honour… those who have touched our lives, sparking  that inner flame, creating a potential that previously didn’t exist.

 

and as an end note– to those who gave their lives, in past and  present wars- they stood their ground for a belief in something. We owe  those people no less, than to stand firm in whatever belief we hold,  whatever line in our own inner-wars. And- we all need to ask,  collectively… for all those who gave their lives in War: do we not owe  them, the legacy of Peace? Perpetuating WAR, does no honour, to those  who laid down their lives. Maybe we need to look to the animals, and  learn those lessons of Peace, acceptance, and compassion.  Look to the  animals and the children.  what lesson is there, that they have not  forgotten– and are trying so desperately, to instill back into each of  us?

100_3306.JPGIn talking about the importance of the  lower chakras, the discussions delved into both cultural stereotypes of  language and perception, as well as encompassing the whole re holistic  and energetic. I heard from a lot of healers who were surprised at their  own Aha’s. Many people commented that they thought they were  incorporating the whole-body approach. Many others also noted their own  realizations regarding their own previously unconscious biases toward  “upper”.. . Often the biases are not outright articulated…. But bias can  take the form of where we put our attention, our energy… our focus.

 

In the discussions, I noted that maybe it  was time to take the 30 day challenge. I asked who else was interested  in joining this. Several people responded enthusiastically.

 

In the writing of that article and the  week-long discussions that fo0llowed, I have been giving a lot more  thought an consideration of bringing the energy down into the physical. I  actually want to elaborate on that. By thought, I do not mean  reflection or meditation or intellectual-thought. This past week, I have  been more aware of things I do, and bringing conscious attention to  accessing, working with and utilizing the lower three chakras- the  physical-level/oriented centers.

 

 

So here are a few exercises I have been doing…feel free to try them and see if they work-help-etc..

 

 

Breathwork- I have a  clearing/grounding ( in terms of clarity… centering/meditation, rather  than chakra grounding—which, I think many will appreciate, myself  included, are not quite the same. I use an eight-count inhale and  eight-count exhale. I have been going up and down the centers, doing at  least one round on each chakra. I started by just doing first-round “  waking each one up”, or, finding where ai felt it.. locating it  energetically. This may sound very elementary, but it actually isn’t.  Try it. Do you envision it? Feel it? Hear it, like music? How does each  one look-feel to you?

 

After the first round, I think went up  through the3 chakras, 2-3 rounds on each one, before moving on. I made  sure I had a strong feel for each one, before drawing that energy up or  down to the next. I went up to the top, and then drew that thread of  Light up to the 8th chakra, source- the pure white light from  our highest self and connection to ultimate source. I then drew this  white light down, to source and replenish the energy body, anchoring it  into the crown chakra with a round of breakthwork, feeling and  envisioning this connection. I then drew down both the white and the  violet to the next chakra, usng a round of brreathwork to anchor-ground  that connection. I went through the chakras in this way.l have done this  both by drawing just the preceding colour and the white down to the  next chakra… and I have done this by drawing down ALL preceding  colours-chakras. In ters of holding a good visual and energetic, drawing  them all down is a little harder. So at least for starters, try JUST  the preceding chakra- and that will weave good connection between them,  strengthening the energetic network.

 

When I had gotten down to the Root chakra, I made sure I had a good connection, and then proceeded to ground that to the earth.

In one of my rounds of meditation chakra  work, I created a sort of storyline.. it begins with source. With the  crown, we tap into source. The third eye takes that and begins to create  and perceive it as Vision. The throat chakra begins to put the pieces  of that cosmic information together with Intuition. The heart takes that  intuition, and with LOVE, begins to HOLD that possibility. NEXT is  needed the WILL, the conscious intention to set that passion for the  idea, into motion. A plan and determination. From there, we need  passion, creative thought, the /fire in the belly. This is how we take  that idea and make it work. From there, this energy feeds and fulfills  our needs for survival. But for this to happen, we also ne3ed the  nourishment from the planet, the resources of the physical world, a  PLACE for it to exist, nutrients ( money, networks,whatever)… to bring  this into existence, to give it birth.

 

Psoas muscle stretching – I had recently  been reading about the importance of the psoas muscle in terms of the  connection between energetic and physical. Amazing synchronicity on the  timing. So I have been dong stretches, simple side stretches. Standing  with feet planted solid, right hand around the front-body, reaching to  the left belt-loop/waist. Holding with a gentle stretch-pull- never to  discomfort or pain. The right hand, behind the back, to balance and  complete the stretch. I have been focusing that same breathwork  exercise, but breath8ing into those lower three centers feeling the  breathwork count, expand the area, dire3cting the breath in such a way  that each chakra area is addressed, sending down energy, and allowing  that energy and stretch to create expansion both energetically and  physically. I do several repetitions, and was amazed that I was even  picking up hints of sacred—geometry pattern-feeling with each chakra,  unique to that chakra. I have no idea if a pattern is like a  finger-print and its own identity, or if that pattern changes over time.  This will be an interesting ex0ploration and I am looking forward to  finding out


I have also spent time laying out on the  ground, unwinding and clearing the lower chakras, direct contact with  the ground, on my belly. I have found that not all exercises need to be  intense and active. Let the body and energy body and Earth do their  work. I learned this approach doing bowen bodywork, which holds the  premise that the body has inherent wisdom and knows what to do, if we  can “ set it up” and get out of the way.

I have also done some impromptu bowenwork  on myself, intuiting my own procedures and able to feel the results by  what it did in my body. That is one of the neat things about the  bowenwork- since it is working by waking up and activating the body’s  own systems.. you can tell by the response, the energy flow that you  start to feel in your body… that its working. I doubt most people know  bowen, or bodywork, but I would guess that if you do some of the  stretches, and look up and understand a littloe bit about where the  ps9oas muscle is, that you could do some gentle massaging and use the  intent of sending that to the psoas and are3a…. and you might be  surprised at the results. Again, be gentle and use inte3nt.

I have also been spending conscious time  outside. Making a note and practice of connecting with the trees and  earth energy ( faeries, nature, gnomes, insert ty0pe of choice, as well  as the elementals/elements.)..

 

Massaging each center, essential oils,  just holding your hands over each one briefly. One important aspect is  to keep in mind.. what are you DOING.. what is your engaged activity,  especially around the physical-oriented centers.. because this is about  the ability to reconnect the re3alm of ideas and energy, with the  physical world—how we walk our talk, our ability to make things HAPPEN,  to manifest and be abundant. We all want abundance and synchronicity—but  the cosmic mailman needs an address for delivery- a PLACE for those  things to HAPPEN.

All of these things have been working to  build an awareness and more consistent feedback loop mechanism. Or, the  beginning of one. I hope, that like any activity, that with time those  energetic muscles become strong, fit and vibrant… and that the outcome  will be better success and connection to physical level manifesting.

100_2950.JPGI was just out grazing my goats… a neighbor is very generous in  saying its fine for the goats to graze in his open field. The dual  benefit-drawback.. is that I need to stay somewhat in attendance while  they are grazing. I can usually work a horse or teach a riding lesson,  and keep them in sight. But there are times when the benefit aspect is  just sitting out or laying out in the grass– constructively doing  nothing. Pretty sweet deal:)

 

This morning while I  was out in the field, stretched out in that perfect spot between sun and  flickering shade… I spent a while grounding and meditating– by which I  mean a relaxed flow of thoughts, that were coherent and interesting. I  had a few mini aha’s and insights…

 

 

The first one was in  reference to the lower chakras… As most healers know.. the vast majority  of people stepping into their spiritual awakening are all over-focused  on the “ higher chakras.” I also went through this.. process.. or  journey.

 

 

Somehow it seems that  the “higher chakras” are better, or more important.. they are a “higher  vibration,” our connection to Source, or spirit, or cosmic  energy-vibration. THAT is the “good stuff.” And we spend an awful lot of  time sucking all that “higher energy” into our energy bubbles. I don’t  know if this is because we really do still live in a paradigm that likes  to rank things.. which some being better, superior, or more desirable..  than others. Most light-workers are very top-heavy.. stuck in their  “upper bodies,” or as we might call them, dreamers.. with their heads in  the clouds, etc. This is not to pass judgement, simply to note that the  metaphors we use to describe people…. really does reflect the energetic  paradigm that is playing out.

 

 

What I realised this  morning.. and a little bit, last night ( it came into better clarity,  from a vague amorphous shape).. is that, like the colours in a palette,  or the rainbow– which the chakras mirror… each colour has its place role  and function.

 

 

Additionally, what I  did add in this morning, was.. the absolute importance of the “ lower  chakras.” and wow- we even refer to them as lower chakras.. and by which  linguistic association.. lower is inferior.. lower grades, lower levels  of a building are less desirable than a penthouse, etc. I am sure you  could come up with several of your own associations on that, yourself.

 

 

BUT… the lower  chakras.. they are the physical chakras. If you consider the body even,  where they are located, they are more strongly connected and relate to  the physical organs of digestion, organ function, and  elimination/grounding. We NEED those chakras. Especially the healers and  light-workers… it is one thing to have an idea, a concept… but the same  way the body needs physical calories in order to be a top performing  athlete.. the light-worker NEEDS to strengthen those chakras in order to  make anything HAPPEN.

 

 

Synchronicity, is like  electricity, it needs a closed circuit.. a ground to complete the  circuit. And anyone who has animals, and electric fencing can appreciate  that the best fencing is useless if it is not a full circuit, or if  anything is grounding it out, as we say.. the stray branch will  interfere just as much as if it were broken completely.

 

 

So… all the upper  chakra development, and elevation won’t help the light-worker to make  things happen in their lives. Their vision will remain in its  dream-stage.. a concept that stays up in the upper atmosphere and  chakras… without the meat and muscle of the lower half.

 

 

I remember years ago,  when I was still learning my path, I had an association that if you had  to work on your lower chakras…. it was like that was your “level”.. no  one wants to stay stuck in 1st grade.. we all want to be  graduate students. So I think there is a tendency to gloss-over those  foundations. But this couldn’t be less true. I understand now, that  having a block in a lower chakra, for example.. can mean the higher  chakras are all tuned and honed like a higher performance race car. That  ones personal vibration is not insulted or diminished by doing the work  on the lower chakras. An athlete would not exercise one leg and not the  other.. or just the upper half of the body without the lower. But all  too often, that is what light-workers tend toward.. energetic  paraplegics.. whose lower half remains under-developed or dismissed as  less important/ relevant. Would you feed your body in such a way that  nourished only some organs, and not others? That is what we do, when we  dismiss the vital importance of the whole energetic spectrum and energy  field. Want to manifest something, but can’t? Chances are it is because  the physical-oriented department is out of shape.

 

 

As an offshoot, I had  another insight– which may be relevant only to myself, but since it was  connected to this thread, I thought it might tie in, in some way. I  remember when I had had a discussion with someone about the  light-workers, working with ascended masters.. I was told I was  currently working on the 2nd ray ( of seven).. or it might have been the 5th. I remember when I had read the different items.. the 6th had resonated more for me.. as had the 7th/8th rays.. I realised this morning.. as a light-worker.. the ray I might be  working with, and the associated Ascended Master.. might have nothing  to do with my own personal developmental level.

 

 

It could very well be  like the teacher who chooses a grade level to teach, because that is an  area they already know well. Of course it could also be that, while they  know that area…. it could just have been the cosmic niche that was open  and needed filling. A vacancy… or a bigger “need” for people working  with that ‘level.’ so again, I have found that it is imperative not to  hold onto our human and especially Western paradigm and unconscious  concepts of levels and assessment. Where we have chosen to be.. may have  little or nothing to do with our spiritual maturity/  evolution/resonance. Or it may… or it may, but not in any way we might  perceive it to be. The universe is a very funny place, that way. The  trick is to be able to “do the work,” that is presented to each of us…  and be able to detach from any self-assessment around it. It might be  part of our inner work, it might be our “cosmic community service.”  Either way.. attend it with love and compassion– because it is,  ultimately.. the work we have chosen or agreed to do:)
