Re: What is Createspace?

There is no difference between self publishing and independent publishing. Both phrases just mean that the author is publishing their own book as opposed to using a traditional publisher.

CS is not a publisher at all, they are a print and distribution service that publishers (be they traditional, or self/indy) can use to print their books through Print On Demand as opposed to a large run offset print and to distribute said book to various retail entities such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble etc.

Re: What is Createspace?

I used to use the term indie publishing for my small press, until the term started becoming synonymous with self-publishing.

There are basically three types of publishing:

- traditional publishing, either with a big 5 publisher or small press or somewhere in between

- vanity or hybrid publishing, where you have a house brand "imprint" who can assist you end to end with publishing and distribution but you pay in part or in full for this service

- self publishing, where you have full control and responsibility over the process, but you have to pay for help or DIY. Platforms like CS facilitate your DIY by handling the printing and fulfilment of orders. They don't make any decisions about content or presentation, and they don't promote your work.

And be aware that CS is a division of Amazon, not an independent company. If you want to avoid that stigma (physical bookstores are very unlikely to stock or even special-order a CS book), you should look at IngramSpark. And by all means avoid the third option, which is the awful KDP Print.
