How do I make the cover I created from inDesign into a 1-page PDF?

I have an inDesign document setup for my cover but it won't let me upload to CreateSpace unless it's one page. But there's a back and front, which makes it two pages? I'm probably missing something here.

Re: How do I make the cover I created from inDesign into a 1-page PDF?

Let's say your book is 6 x 9 with 200 pages . . . your art will be:

  • 0.125" (bleed) + 6" (back cover) + 0.5" (cream stock/spine) + 6" (front cover) + 0.125" (bleed) = 12.75" wide
  • 0.125" (bleed) + 9" (cover) + 0/125" (bleed) = 9.25" high

And that should be your InDesign page size: 12.75" x 9.25" or if you created a page with a bleed, then 12.5" x 9" with a 0.125" bleed.

In Indesign you would Export to PDF.  And:

If you did not create a separate bleed, then do not tick Marks and Bleeds > Use Document Bleed.

If you did create a separate bleed, then tick Use Document Bleed

Do not select any Marks

This should give you a print-ready PDF to upload.

However, I not sure I understand why you are having problems, so maybe I misunderstand what you are working with.  Can you discribe your file?

I suggest that you download a cover template from https://www.bookow.com/resources.php#cs-cover-template-generator.  Follow the instructions, which are printed right on it.

Let me second Dan'l's answer.  Use it to determine your page size.  Then you can place it in your document. Select layers, create a new layer above it and build your cover.  Pull in guidelines and or use opacity to see where things go.

Here's the deal in 25 words or less: You'll need to upload a PDF that contains a single image consisting of back cover + spine + front cover.

I agree with the people recommending the bookow.com templates, especially as there are specific InDesign versions of them. I'm only ever so slighly biased.

I wasn't exporting it as a spread.

This won't include the spine, so still won't be the right size for your book. Please use a template and make your cover ONE PAGE in InDesign that includes the back cover, spine, and front cover.

If you give me your trim size, page count, and paper color (B&W or color?), I can give you the exact instructions for setting this up in InDesign.

Re: How do I make the cover I created from inDesign into a 1-page PDF?

Hello everyone

I'm new here - my first day.  I've been creating a picture book in InDesign with a two-page spread layout as I read that's how you get started.  However, I've just joined CS and find that this does not seem to be the right way to go.  What a novice I am!

So, do I have to make a one-page MS Word document instead, please?  It may cause problems inserting my pictures.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated, thanks.

Are you asking about the interior file? This original thread was about the cover.

Also, it's a good idea to start your own thread if you have an issue, rather then add onto an old thread.
