How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

Hi! I'm new to the forum. I've read that you can set up an Amazon Advantage account for preordering and then take pre-orders for your CreateSpace book. But how do you do this exactly. I created an account on Amazon Advantage but the interface is a bit confusing and I don't know exactly how to link these 2 components (Advantage and CreateSpace). Furhermore,m when I emailed Amazon Advantage for help (they don't take phone calls), I was told thatthey do not work with CreateSpace. But I know is not correct. I have read posts on here about folks publishing thru CreateSpace, but taking pre-orders thru Advantage. Can someone help me up with setting this up? Has anyone published thru Createspace, but took pre-orders thru Advantage before their book officially released. I'd greatly appreciate help. My book is set to release Feb 6 and I have people that want to pre-order.

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

Hi, welcome to the CreateSpace community

Yes, I'm one of a couple authors here who have done this.

The AmazonAdvantage program works well if you've not published your book yet through CreateSpace.

Also, you must have the ISBN of your book.

As soon as your book is ready to be published, then you notify AA (through the AA interface) to 'suspend' your book so that you don't have to worry about distribution, taking orders, etc thru AA. You want CS do do all the work.

Basically, by setting up you account with AA and adding your book, you are doing what the Amazon staff would do in setting up your Amazon Product Page.

I'll try to give you the steps necessary to get you started, you just have to fill in the blanks where AA askes you to enter information.

Sign in: https://advantage.amazon.com/gp/vendor/sign-in

  1. At top of page, click on the 'Items' tab and a pull down-menu will appear.
  2. Click on 'Add an Item'.
  3. You'll be asked to enter your product (book, music-pop, music classical, DVD, VHS).
  4. Pick Book Option.
  5. Enter your ISBN.
  6. Continue with the steps it prompts you with.

After you have completed that, you'll want to upload the image of your book.

  1. At top of page, click on the 'Items' tab and a pull down-menu will appear.
  2. Click on 'Upload Images'.
  3. Continue with the steps it prompts you with.

Within less than 24 hours, if you've done everything correctly, you'll have your own Product/Book Detail Page set up on Amazon.

By using the additional options in the drop down menu, you can make updates to your book status, item content, etc.

This should get you started in the right direction. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.

Eric

P.S. PM me if you'd like.

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

I just did this.  I indicated my book not to be published until March1st.  Is there anything else I have to do?  I'm not sure if this is going to mess up sales from CS or not.

Thanks for the info.  I was wondering the same question the original poster asked so I found this thread.

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

Hi Janie,

In answer to your question:

jmonares wrote: "I indicated my book not to be published until March1st. Is there anything else I have to do? I'm not sure if this is going to mess up sales from CS or not."

1 - You need to make sure that when March 1st comes around, that you've already approved your book so that it get's "published" (this is the step in the process where you should have clicked the "Approve Proof" button in your CS Control Panel after being satisfied with your proof copy).

2 - Make sure you request through your AmazonAdvantage Control Panel (by opening a support ticket) and tell them that you'd no longer wish for AA to fullfill your orders, that you are having CreateSpace take over the responsibility of printing/distributing copies of your book because they are your printer.

If you've done that, then there may not be anything else you need to do, your Amazon Product/Book Detail Page order button will change from "Pre-order: Add to Cart" to "Add To Cart" and your customers will be able to purchase your book directly in 'real-time'.

However, be cognizant of the following:

Once your title is enrolled in Advantage, Amazon will place an order for it. The first order is usually within 7-10 days after the title is approved. When Amazon places an order for your title, they'll send you an e-mail to alert you. The orders are automatically generated based on current and anticipated customer demand. So Amazon may order as little as one copy of your title as determined by their ordering system. What Amazon is trying to achieve is to always have enough copies in inventory so that the detail page for your title continually reads "In Stock." Their intial order for the most part is set for a conservative number of copies; and as your sales increase, their orders to you will be more. But You Don't Have To Worry About That because you've asked AA to have CreateSpace take over that responsibility.

However, what about the orders you get as I mentioned above . . . ? What do you do?

In the AA Control Panel after you click on Purchase Orders, you'll have the following choices:

  • Accepted and Shipped.
  • Cancelled: Not yet available.
  • Cancelled: Permanently out of stock.
  • Cancelled: Temporarily out of stock.

Since you ARE NOT going to use AA to ship books to/from (you are basically using AA to pre-promote/market your book), you can either choose "Cancelled: Not Yet Available" and indicate the date the book will be available (March 1st) or you can choose "Cancelled: Temporarily out of stock" and indicate the date your book will be available (March 1st).

If you have further questions or you are confused, feel free to clarify in this post.

Eric

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

I just checked Amazon and my book is already showing up on their site minus the picture of my book.  I uploaded a picture last night but I'm unsure of how long it will take for them to add it.  Here's the link:  http://www.amazon.com/Ship-Mates-Janie-S-Monares/dp/0985018003/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1328800013&sr=1-4

I did as Eric sugggested and went through the "contact" link from my acocunt on AA and opened a case.  I hope I did it in the correct section.  It didn't give me a ticket number, just a case ID.

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

I received an email from AA and this is what they told me, "Createspace and Amazon are two different programs.  Please be informed that you will not be able to sell items through two different channels at the same time.  As you have mentioned that the following item will be available through Createspace, I have closed this title in your Amazon account."

It should take less than 24 hours for them to get the image of your book up on your Amazon Product/Book Detail Page.

Congrats on getting your page up, now you can start adding additional information to your page so that it can help market your book.

jmonares wrote: "I did as Eric sugggested and went through the "contact" link from my acocunt on AA and opened a case. I hope I did it in the correct section.  It didn't give me a ticket number, just a case ID."

That's correct. You are given a case number which you'll be able to get access to and get updates on by clicking on it's 'live' link.

jmonares wrote: I received an email from AA and this is what they told me, "Createspace and Amazon are two different programs.  Please be informed that you will not be able to sell items through two different channels at the same time.  As you have mentioned that the following item will be available through Createspace, I have closed this title in your Amazon account."

This is how you should respond to their reply so that you can get your specific title to stay 'open' until it's ready to be published/printed:

Respond to AA and tell them you understand that Amazon and CreateSpace cannot allow the selling and distribution of the same item at the same time. That's why you indicated in your AA account that the book title in question will not be made available until March 1, so there is no need to 'close' the title. Amazon allows it's AA members to pre-promote/pre-market their titles with the help of AA account access to the member's book titles. So you would appreciate if the title is not closed.

What I should have clarified to you earlier, contacting AA about 'switching' the control of AA to CS, could have been prevented this response from them. If I'd been more clear on when you should have asked them to make the 'switch' (1 or 2 days before you are ready to publish) would have been the best case. But no worries, reply as per my suggested response indiated above and you should be good to go.

If you have further questions or concerns, let me know.

Eric

Hi Janie,

Just checked your Amazon Product/Book Detail Page and your book cover is now 'active', didn't take more than 24 hours to show up (just as I thought).

Actually, you only need to use this shortened version of your book url to access it:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0985018003/

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

Thank you Eric.  Now I'm encountering another problem.  I just received a response from amazon regarding my last e-mail and they said they closed out my title.  It still shows up on Amazon though as a pre-order.  My concern is, I have a friend who just placed a pre-order.  Will createspace be alerted to ship once it's available?  I went on my aa account and there is no title shown so I can't cancel or modify it.

Thanks,

Janie

Re: How to do pre-ordering on Amazon Advantage with CreateSpace

Hi Janie,

As usual, sometimes these representatives just don't understand what we are asking! You said they wrote back to your last response and said that your title is closed - duh! You already know that . . . you were asking them that you would appreciate them to NOT close your title. All said and done, a representative should make your title 'active' or open because you've not published (printed) your book through CS yet.

So this is what I suggest, if you are comfortable with this, give me access to your account and I'll write a nice response to them so that you can get back on track. Send me a private message via CS and provide me with your username and password. You'll be able to change both your username and or password when this is all complete. If you are worried that I might see some account numbers, the important stuff is x'd out so no worries.

It sounds like you've got the unlucky part of the draw . . . you've got a couple representatives that aren't aware or care that you CAN actually do what you requested.

As far as the pre-order being made, don't worry about that, it should stay in the AA system. Your friend will not be billed anyway until it's available/shipped. So if your friend has to, he/she can always re-order the book but don't tell your friend to do that at this point because it may not be necessary.

Eric

Aw thanks for offering to help Eric.  It's okay though.  As long as I don't have to worry about my friend's pre-order, I'm okay.  I just didn't want her not getting the book sent out when it's available.  My title still shows up on Amazon.com so it's fine...lol...I guess I don't need to fool with aa anymore...whew!
