How do you convert Word files into epub files?

Hi,

Does anyone know how to convert Word files into epub files?

I would suggest using Calibre. It is a free software that can be downloaded.

The simplest way from my point of view is to copy the text into Sigil (free), which will give you an e-pub file.  Then if you want to have a Kindle file, open the file in Calibre (free), and convert to mobi.

For some books it is that simple.  For others you might have to learn a little coding . . . you can past coded files into Sigil's code view window; or plain text into the book view window.

Whatever your goal, proof the file in a device . . . simulations on your computer are just that simulations.

Simplest way I have found is to download OpenOffice and the ePub extension. Open the doc file in OO and click on the ePub icon. Done is about 2 seconds for a 350 page book.

I forgot to mention that both the OO program and Write2ePub extension are free.

I have tried with three browsers for half an hour today and about that a few days ago to download the Writer2ePub.  No way, josé.

I did note that the description says: "If you need to obtain a pure wysiwyg ePub file, W2E is not for you."  I don't want 100% WYSIWYG, I know that's not possible, but none of the other converters Amazon's Export to Plugin, 50MB, for CS5; Word to Web page filtered or non-filtered; Acrobat to xml or html . . . do a good job.

When I am able to download it, I'll give it a try.

If you're on a Mac, there's a system plugin that can turn pretty much any file (Word, Excel, images, video, etc) into an ePub -- http://www.macosxautomation.com/lion/epub/

Or open the .doc in Pages and export to ePub. No plugins required.

If on a PC, I'd recommend this workflow:

1. Open Word doc in Open Office* and use the ePub export option.

2. Open resulting file in Sigil* and clean it up. Every ePub file I've exported from another program has required some tidying up in Sigil. The closest I've come to a near-perfect export is in InDesign CS 5.5. Even CS 5 does an average job.

3. Don't forget to add your metadata while in Sigil.

4. Open the ePub in Adobe Digital Editions* to check the formatting looks right. If not, go back to Sigil and fix the formatting.

5. Open the ePub in a program in ePubCheck* to make sure it is "valid". If there is invalid code in your ePub, iTunes and PubIt might reject your file.

6. Open the ePub in Calibre* if you wish then convert to other ebook formats, such as .mobi for Kindle.

All programs with a * are free to download.

OpenOffice is very good.

To export ePub files...

Tools>Extension Manager>Get more extensions on-line...

This will take you to this page: http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/getmore?cid=920794

and the first extension listed should be Writer2ePub. Download it and follow the instructions from there. I am surprised that this appears to be the most popular exptension to OpenOffice. I suppose that is a commentary on how popular ebook publishing has become.

As a followup . . . Seal sent me the Writer2ePub plug-in.  I loaded it and tried it. It did a good job . . . but as Michelle pointed out, it still needs cleanup. But if the book I had tried it on had more complicated formatting, then I'd be back to doing it all by hand.

I agree. I took Michelle's suggestion and used Sigil for the fine tuning of the OpenOffice-Writer2ePub-exported ePub file. Doing this also seems to have disposed of the unwanted ad (for Writer2ePub) that appeared automatically on its last page.

As for why MS-Word is behind in this respect, it's not the first time. I think OpenOffice was doing a better job than Word years before Gates stepped down. I bet it was the reason he gave up

Except that Pages does not export to .ePub when the book is other than text.

I've converted heaps of books from Pages to ePub which contain images. Are you talking about strictly picture/photo books? For these I convert each page from PDF to JPG and then collate in Sigil.

You might find my post useful:

Basically, I have my own online epub tool that I built. You're welcome to try it out -- it'll always be free, just for indie authors like myself. As long as your book is a novel, you shouldn't have a problem with it.
