What size should a barcode be?

Hi there. I've seen people listing the size for the box it goes in (I think that's what they are referring to). But are there guidelines on what size your actual barcode should be, within that box? (Ie so we can make that box look nicer rather than just filling it with a massive barcode). I have generated a barcode on Bookow...and I'm about to send it to my designer.

To confirm also, if we generate and place the barcode ourselves, we can put it anywhere (although conventionally it goes at bottom of page), but if we back out and just end up placing a box for Createspace to fill with a barcode they generate themselves, it has to be bottom right, is that correct?

Re: What size should a barcode be?

You basically have it. You can place the barcode "anywhere." CS says:

Barcode

When your files go through the review process, our system will place your ISBN barcode in a 2" by 1.2" white box in the lower right-hand corner of your book's  back cover. Our standard trim size templates will show you exact  barcode placement.

Images or text in the barcode location will be covered when the book  is printed. Make sure no important elements appear where the barcode  will be placed.

If you choose to provide and place your own barcode, be sure it is a high-resolution image.

You can get more information on ISBNs from:

http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/isbn/international/html/usm1.htm ISBN User's Manual

http://www.barcode-us.com/upc/upcColorChart.html

http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/isbn/international/html/usm7.htm

And you can get your own barcode from

Now you've probably got more information than you ever wanted on this!

Re: What size should a barcode be?

You'll find a sizing guideline in one of the links.  I generally make a box about 2 x 1.2 and fit the barcode in.  Take a look at the books around you.  You'll find most are about the same, but some get much smaller.  I don't recall every seeing one that got real big!

Re: What size should a barcode be?

Hi Piearsdavidson,

Thanks for using my barcode generator.

There is an official size for barcodes, and the specifications allow for variance from 80% to 200% of the nominal size.

At 100%, the nominal size for the barcode symbol (the bars plus the ISBN below the bars, not including the ISBN above the bars) is 37.29mm wide and 25.93 mm tall. That's 1.468" wide by 1.02" tall. My barcode generator generates a barcode that exact size, but with the ISBN above the bars the height ends up at 1.18". Note, these are for barcodes without the supplementary price code.

With the supplementary price code, the dimensions are 2.17" by 1.18" at 100%.

My recommendation is to use a size from 80% to 100%. A lot of books use the 80% size. Once you've generated the barcode with bookow.com, don't resize it. If you need it at a different size, go back to bookow.com and generate a new one at the required size.

If you need any more assistance with this, don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,

Steve

The barcode size is your decision, but you should remember some necessary barcode parameter, such as the left, right margin. you can get nice info in this barcode generator website.

If you are trying to generate ISBN barcode images for your products, then you have to see this website. And the link below is connected to the barcode size issue:
