Does general knowledge have to be acknowledged and cited?

If I include interesting general knowledge re: animals and nature, within my poetry book (beneath each poem) - do I have to acknowledge the source of information?  If so, how?

Any help gratefully received

I guess it depends on how general.

How many wings or legs a fly has, no.

Mammals have live births, no.

Frogs like water, no.

Something you read, saw, heard that was quoted from someone, somewhere, yes.

It depends on the source, whether it's something widely known, a quote or copied from someone else etc etc.

Simple answer... it depends.

Absolutely, if you want to avoid arrest for General Knowledge Infringement, a class II felony. For example, if you read somewhere that penguins are polar bears' favorite food, and you write a poem about it without revealing where you obtained that information, better lawyer up fast. Prisons are full of poets who flouted these laws.

Even more draconian are the statutes addressing bad poetry, primarily class I felonies.

There's one thing that's certain in this life, whenever I see that you've replied to somebody, I can be sure that I'll be entertained.

Thanks for the laughs

Hi,

Thanks for your swift, helpful response.  Yes, most are literally 'general knowledge' - readily available on websites and in general knowledge books - hence I was 'almost' certain they were fine to include.  Only one is slightly more specific, less likely to be discovered online or in books, but found in one or two reliable paper based science journals.

Thank you for clarifying.
