Anyone know about using Quotes from Other Sources in Your Work?

Is anyone familiar with Fair Use and Copyright Law? I want to use quotes from the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning in my work as part of the Chapter headings. In fact, I already have them plugged in. While from what I've read on-line, her work falls into the Public Domain arena thanks to its age, I am hesitant and have a few questions. Okay, one question: is there a word count limit to what I can quote? You see, I am pulling lines from a number of poems, not one in particular, and even some letters, but when added together the number is almost 870 words. That's a lot!

I am not quite done with my final draft so I have some time to figure this out. Of course, I plan to acknowledge my sources and give credit where it is due, but I just want to make sure I am doing everything by the book. (Pun intended!)

Thanks for any feedback!
