Interior formatting: filling the pages with text

I am using CreateSpace's 5.25 x 8 unformatted interior paperback template. I made some changes to the margins because I like more room in the gutter, so for now I am using 0.85" inside margin, 0.60 outside, 0.75 above and 0.70 below. (I fooled around with different measurements but like this one the best).

But no matter what margins I used, when I copied in the text, I noticed that the pages didn't fill up evenly at the bottom, due apparently to Word not wanting to break my paragraphs. I'm using a MacBook, Word, if that's important.

Do I have to unformat my text in the original document (change to richtext and back, I guess is how you do it) in order for the pages to fill up?

Or what?  HALP!

Thank you in advance!
